Dr Dr Amira Sanki has given a moving and insightful presentation at #ANZAED2023. She explained the importance of screening cosmetic surgery patients for body dysmorphic disorder and having kind and safe conversations around the need to refer to a psychologist. ANZAED

Finally, Dr Toni Pikoos explains some of the outcomes for people with body dysmorphic disorder when they seek cosmetic surgery. Post surgery, most people with BDD experience no change in symptoms and continue to be dissatisfied with their appearance. #ANZAED2023

doi.org/10.1002/eat.24… "If you're not performing, you're not working hard enough, you're not thin enough". These words, from an elite female athlete, are quoted from my first publication of my PhD.

In this review, I read, analysed, and synthesised the findings from 38 qualitative studies (e.g., interviews, focus groups) looking at eating disorders and body image concerns in elite athletes.

Together with my research team, we aimed to understand athletes' own perspectives on 2 key questions: 1) why are elite athletes at such a high risk for eating disorders, and 2) what stops athletes from seeking and receiving help in this area?

We found 8 "meta-themes" that stretched over the shared experiences of athletes across the 38 studies, offering ideas and hypotheses in response to these questions.

A huge thank you to all of the athletes who participated in the included studies, and to my research team Deb Mitchison, Nikki Jeacocke, A/Prof Emma George, Sinead Day, and Phillipa Hay. More to come!
