I've had an awesome week here in Worcester @AmAntiquarian. I read a few issues of illustrated Lowell newspapers and found another story of a Lowell mill girl. I have learned so much from being a part of this week's CHAViC seminar focused on Disability americanantiquarian.org/node/9742

So they are currently filming scenes for the Walking Dead right now in downtown #Lowell, and simultaneously, an alert has just gone out to all devices that the state-wide 911 system is down. Add the 95+degree heat and it's feeling pretty apocalyptic-y.

Brought my whole family and we had a lovely time binding booklets and looking at some 19th-century children's books, diaries, drawings, and handwritten newspapers like the Skowhegan Clarion and The Monthly. Check out the awesome digitized collection here: americanantiquarian.org/historic-child…

In light of a big new list of the best books of the 21st century, I thought some folks might enjoy this list published May 29, 1896 in the Minneapolis Penny Press of the most popular novels in various "departments of fiction." Some of these are sure to cause a fight.

Spending a little time with old issues of Punch, and though I'm pretty sure Punch is making fun of these ladies, honestly, I love both the morning and evening fashions from 1866.

Delighted to find several #recipes for writing a sensation novel. July 18, 1864 Daily Boston Advertiser provided three variations, including "a la Madame Henri de Bois" (Mrs. Henry Wood), an unnamed author (clearly Mary Elizabeth Braddon), and "Cilkie Wollins" (Wilkie Collins).

Among inauspicious moments in Presidential visit history: June 1833, President Andrew Jackson visited #Lowell. The Rose Bud or Youth's Gazette (Charleston, SC) reported that a group of boys saluted him with artillery & two boys -- Russell and Drummer -- each lost a hand.
