The #Roman cavalry-mask from Kalkriese, one of the most iconic finds from any Roman battlefield. Belonging (probably) to one of the soldiers caught in the AD 9 Varian Disaster, the rest of the helmet & the silver layer were taken by looters, leaving just the iron base behind.

Today we wave goodbye to summer and welcome in the autumn, this Equinox being a time of gratitude, preparation & balance.      The nights grow longer, reminding us that everything is temporary, that nothing lasts forever & to recognise & appreciate all that we have. #MOM #Mithras

In the Mithraic Mysteries, Cautes & Cautopates are torch-bearers depicted attending the God Mithras. These torchbearers have much meaning and importance in our rites, symbolising many things; such as the sunrise & sunset, the spring & autumn equinoxes, good & evil, life & death.

#Mehregan is an ancient Iranian festival in honour of #Mithra & a time to celebrate the cycles of life. Today recognised as a festival of harvest & resurrection, Persians celebrate this as a time of renewing our friendships, visiting family & giving thanks for all we have.

In the view of the ancient Egyptians life is our opportunity to prepare for the perilous journey of the soul after death. At the end of days you will be required to look your soul (often depicted as a human-headed bird) in the eye. Will you be ready? Photo by Santha Faiia

Samhain means summers end in Gaelic & marks the beginning of winter or "darker half" of the Celtic year, now celebrated as #Halloween A time when the nights grow longer & all around us freezes & dies, we find ourselves between the seasons, the realms of the living & the dead.

The remains of a #Roman tavern (probably) in the vicus at Housesteads (Britain) - seemingly the scene of an ancient murder. Two skeletons, a man & (probably) a woman, were found buried under the floor of the back room - one with a knife tip in the ribs. #RomanSiteSaturday

Diwali is a time to celebrate light & of inner illumination. To commit ourselves to good deeds and bring us closer to divinity. To reflect on life & make the changes we want for the upcoming year. For the lights that illuminate our homes, represent the light in all our hearts.

When the sun sets on the winter solstice, Jupiter & Saturn will line up in a way not seen for 800 years! Between 16 Dec & Xmas Day, they will look like a double planet, separated by less than the width of a full Moon. The next opportunity isn’t until after 2400. #Jupiter #Saturn

#Hanukkah also known as the Jewish festival of light, celebrates their victory over the Greeks, when afterwards they lit an oil lamp which only had enough oil to burn the candle for one day. Miraculously it burned for eight days. This is now carried out in remembrance.

The Winter Solstice is the longest night & shortest day of the year & marks the first day of winter. Throughout time this has represented the death & resurrection of the sun. Merry Solstice, everyone! #LuxBrumalis #Solstice #SolInvictus
