Events in #Bangladesh one year ago were momentous and tragic. Commemorating them at Permanent Mission of Bangladesh, Geneva this morning, I looked back on my visit to #Dhaka 6 months ago. We support Bangladesh in addressing last summer’s events and strengthening human rights going forward.

Visiting Indonesia, I met Government, civil society and human rights institutions and the UN. We discussed the promotion and protection of fundamental freedoms including for media, women, the people of Papua, and refugees. Terima Kasih!

The UN fact-finding mission has described executions and torture of civilians, prolific rape and sexual violence, and indiscriminate military attacks - not just in isolated cases, but affecting millions of people in Sudan. They are right that we cannot ignore this. UK for Sudan 🇬🇧

The UN Fact-Finding Mission on Sudan has found the SAF & RSF committed war crimes. It shows RSF’s ethnic killings in Darfur and use of sexual violence and starvation may amount to crimes against humanity. This is horrific. All parties must agree to a humanitarian pause now.

For too long the Sudanese people have endured unimaginable suffering. The UK welcomes US coordination with Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE on steps to end this brutal conflict and enable a peaceful, inclusive transition. Sudan’s future must be decided by its people.

A pleasure to see Sebastien Lai in Geneva today. His love and dedication to his father is clear to all. The UK continues to call on the Hong Kong authorities to end their politically motivated prosecution and immediately release Sebastian’s father, British national Jimmy Lai, 77.

Unacceptable that two more British MPs have been denied entry to the Occupied Palestinian Territories by Israel. I have remained in contact with both colleagues throughout and I have been clear with the Israeli authorities that this is no way to treat British parliamentarians.

The UK is running for a seat on the UN Human Rights Council 2026 - 2028. Our pledges focus on some of the most pressing human rights challenges facing the international community. The UK is ready to serve. With action. With purpose. With dignity for all. 🇬🇧🇺🇳🌏🌍🌎

Reports of mass civilian casualties in El Fasher, Sudan are deeply shocking - for too long the warring parties have shown blatant disregard for humanitarian law. We demand accountability, urgent de-escalation and protection of civilians. Aid must be able to reach those in need.

I strongly welcome the news that Alaa Abd El-Fattah has received a Presidential pardon. I'm grateful to President Sisi for this decision.   We look forward to Alaa being able to return to the UK, to be reunited with his family.
