"No human can possibly go through the thousands of coronavirus genomes generated daily to look for hints of troublesome mutations." - that's what a team of ~30 try and do daily at the @PHE_uk Horizon Scanning Meeting! theatlantic.com/science/archiv…

Tons of new info about B.1.617 in @PHE_uk's latest technical briefing on covid #variants (which are rather excellent if I do say so). A 🧵on some key points. assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/upl…

Have you ever wondered if a lineage is expanding within a phylogeny? Now you can find out with our latest paper bit.ly/3wdHqaS and software github.com/dhelekal/CaveD… @DHelekal AliceLedda, PhD 💙 erik m volz @DavidWYLLIE20 @HPRUged

There has been a lot of confusion about lower rates of hospitalisation with Omicron. How much is a consequence of intrinsically lower severity vs over-representation of Omicron among vaccinated and reinfected individuals? We try to disentangle these effects.

High-res SARS-CoV-2 time series gave us the rare opportunity to study both census and effective population size over time. The often enormous discrepancy really is quite puzzling — to me, most likely explained by a population structure conducive to local jackpot events.

This study was spearheaded skillfully by @QinqinYu, strongly supported by Takashi Okada and Joao Ascensao. Big thanks to erik m volz and Olivia Bold for collaborating and to the entire UK for investing so much into SARS-CoV-2 sequencing.
