I am completely spoiled by modern PCB shops. I now view a 6-layer (S-G-S-S-G-S) stackup as the cheap "default". For a lot of my designs 6 layers with ENIG and via-in-pad literally costs ~$2 more per board than 2 layers with no features. You can do PCIe gen3 on a $3 board now!
