Michael was sent to NWR, while Gordon was rebuilt at Crewe, in an agreement with LNER. Michael was envied by the NWR locomotives, especially Crovan, as he was the current WNW locomotive. Crovan competed with Michael for space at WNW until Gordon's return in 1940.

After World War II, STH I decided that Michael and Gordon would be the locomotives for the WNW, while Crovan would be sent to The Sudrian, and Crovan accepted the decision, knowing that it was best for the NWR. Gordon and Michael made the WNW the most famous train in the UK.

When NWR joined British Railway, the LNER P2s were all rebuilt by Thompson into A2/2s, and Michael was next in line. Michael told STH II that he did not want to be rebuilt, and STH II agreed and did not let Michael be rebuilt, only giving him a refurbishment.

In 1968, diesels were sent to NWR, one of them being Hazel, a BR Class 55, much to the disdain of Gordon and Michael, as the diesels replaced all LNER Pacifics on the BR. Hazel stayed at WNW, creating a great rivalry with Gordon and Michael, with Michael being her greatest rival.

During the early years of preservation, BR was eager to sell stock to preservationists. The SVR's David Williams had been offered 8 Ivatt 2-6-2Ts by BR at Β£1,300 per as well as Q1 33006 for Β£2,198 & even 34005 Barnstaple for Β£1,700! The issue was simple - the cost was too high!

Dwarfed by virtually everything around it, Johnson 1134A 41523 looks rather bedraggled post-withdrawal at Derby in March 1955. Its 51 years of service had come to a close at 17B Burton Shed on the 26th. It would be survived by classmate 41518, which found refuge at Staveley.

This weekend will be our last opening weekend at Pendon before Christmas and what better way to celebrate the festive season than with a special running exhibition! We'll have two visiting layouts and we also hope to run a couple of exhibition themed trains on the Dartmoor scene.

This Christmas month, our team came across a tape of a documentary about Sir Topham Hatt's railway locomotive number 3. We are working to restore and clean up all the footage.
