I really appreciated the Keynote session this morning at IPVS/ESPHM from Dr. Ludovic Plee of the Food and Agriculture Organization EMC on strategies of crisis and disaster management. Eye opening to learn that 98% of member countries are not prepared for an emergency animal crisis. @ipvs_esphm2024

Dr. Adrian Balaban, swine veterinarian from Romania, speaking about his frustrations, challenges and opportunities with unclear and insufficient national emergency management plans. A critical reminder of the importance of industry/government cooperation and collaboration.

I appreciate Dr. Adrian Balaban’s reflections, as a farm leader and swine veterinarian, on the importance of voluntary ASF surveillance and how his farms use voluntary stop movement controls within their system to manage risk during routine ASF surveillance and suspicion.

Questions from the floor arising regarding #ASF #Compartmentalization and how it could be utilized in the face of significant disease in backyard farms versus commercial farms with robust surveillance, traceability and biosecurity.

Always fantastic to see my friend and colleague Shane McAuliffe 🐷✈️ at these international conferences. Was very good to compare notes on our respective pork sectors and discuss some of the challenges and opportunities we face.

A real pleasure to catch up with my colleague, Dr. Hiromichi Ishikawa from Summit Veterinary Services and Katsuyoshi Yokohama from ECO AH. It’s been nearly 20 years now connecting at vet meetings all over the world. Looking forward to seeing them again in 2025 at APVS in Japan.

At this mornings session on Welfare and Ethology I found Dr. Miguel Angel Higuera’s presentation on the global consequences of animal welfare recommendations and legislation quite interesting. A clear cause and effect with unforeseen consequences.

Always insightful running into Dr. Chris Richards from Australia. A good discussion on JEV, JEV vaccination and the Pig Code of Practice in Australia. This @ipvs_esphm2024 has been such a great opportunity to reconnect with old friends and make new ones.

Look who I ran into as I was going through the Poster Session here at IPVS-ESPHM. A very good opportunity to catch up with my friend and colleague Dr. Giovani Trevisan from Iowa State University on the steady progress being made with the U.S. Swine Health Improvement Plan.

Thank you Leipzig @ipvs_esphm2024, that was another valuable conference and networking opportunity.
