Reading this urgent 2023 NYPD memoir by an officer of color. Contrasting ā€˜An Incinvenient Cop’ by Edwin Raymond with all the Knapp era NYPD books by white guys I’ve read over the life of this project. As Mark Twain said, history doesn’t repeat, but it often rhymes.

If you know my work, you know that I'm not in the habit of recommending books by police. But the layers and incredible of journey of Edwin Raymond' s life story gives a unique perspective & specific analysis that I needed and haven't read elsewhere. Let me know what you think

While I don’t have the nuanced facts about this particular incident, what I do know extensively all about agressive ā€œtheft of serviceā€ (TOS) enforcement and Broken Windows policing.

NEW: The NYPD makes *40 times* more arrests for fare-beating at the Atlantic Av. L station in Brownsville/East New York than an average stop. I mapped fare evasion arrests and summonses per 100,000 riders. Check out your station: gothamist.com/news/the-nypd-…

ā€œIt is only when white people are forced to give up personal rights that people start calling it a ā€˜police state.ā€™ā€ -Edwin Raymond From ā€˜An Inconvenient Cop’

After a series of progressive reforms between 2017-2019 we saw the lowest enforcement numbers and the also the LOWEST crime rate (especially homicides). While we certainly should not ignore infractions, broad brush Broken-Windows policing isn’t the answer. Your ā€œgutā€ is wrong.
