and my district is trying to do away with "one-time" student workbooks, and move towards re-usable hardbacks and online texts (the former cannot be annotated at all, the latter can only be annotated with extreme difficulty and annoyance)

Love this. Daring to bring some actual scientific methodology into our practice and in a teacher actionable way especially, is where we need to go This 'bit' of a well designed grading system & other replicable things like it should definitely be standardized locally, maybe more

For K-5, a good use of funds: lengthen the school day, increase the amount of *dedicated recess* time (don't make students choose btwn eating and playing). Hire recess aids and mandate recess as protected planning time for teachers

I think the positive side of social media for youth needs to be included in the debate. A well-done social media profile could show a young person's abilities a lot more effectively than a diploma.
