A nice surprise to see Peggy Lee’s BLACK COFFEE among the options for #5albums50s60s4. Can’t remember what clued me in to buy the CD reissue many years ago but it’s always a good idea to have some torch songs on hand.

I love this one for, among other things, conjuring noirish images of Jeanne Moreau, but I’m not sure of my favorite Miles in the batch this time. #5albums50s60s4

First listen to “Charlie” (!) Mingus’s TIJUANA MOODS. I wasn’t expecting it to live up to the hype in the cover text, but I should have known better. Mingus just didn’t miss, did he? #5albums50s60s4

Is E.S.P. my favorite Miles in this round? I’ll confess there are a few tracks that don’t entirely keep my attention. But “Eighty One” and “Mood” are enough on their own to make it an essential album for me. #5albums50s60s4

First listen to Bobbie Gentry’s THE DELTA SWEETE and, wow! I had no idea, fantastic album from start to finish. Straight into my top, um, 18 picks for #5albums50s60s4.

I’ve been hoping to see some tropicália on these lists, so I’m happy that Os Mutantes’ brilliant debut came up in #5albums50s60s4, one of the most representative LPs of the scene and my top pick for this round. (Still hoping to see Gal Costa sneak into the 5th round, though.)

$2.50 at the thrift shop, VG+ or better, would have been worth it even without the record just for Leontyne’s dress at album cover size.

After my Laura Nyro epiphany a few rounds back, I found a nice copy of ELI AND THE THIRTEENTH CONFESSION. So I know it a bit better than NEW YORK TENDABERRY, but that doesn’t it make it easy to choose between the two! (I think it’ll be ELI in the end though.) #5albums50s60s4

Catching up with some favorites from an earlier 5albums50s60s round and this was a good find, sounds amazingly good even on the very cheap turntable I keep here at mom’s house.

I can see for Miles and Miles and Miles and Miles and Miles…. and THE WHO SELL OUT is great too. OK, so obviously KIND OF BLUE, but maybe there’s room for one more Miles in my #5albums50s60s5 ? NEFERTITI? MILES SMILES?

RIP Roberta Flack about six months ago. FIRST TAKE is so good and still feels underrated, there’s gotta be room for it in my top 5 this round. I also love the fact that her middle name was Cleopatra. #5albums50s60s5

One of my favorite Sinatras, top of the heap, maudlin sad-clown cover art and all. ONLY THE LONELY is not heard to best advantage in broad daylight, as I just listened to it, but I don’t need an after-hours revisit to know that it’s firmly in my top 5 for #5albums50s60s5.

Yeah it’s gonna be NEFERTITI, which I might actually prefer to KIND OF BLUE? Well the ranking isn’t set but they’ll both be in my top 5 when it comes time to vote for #5albums50s60s5
