Especially the fascinating closing talk by Duncan Mitchell on “Lice, ticks and the Comrades Marathon”, addressing the ability of humans to undertake endurance exercise in the heat.

This hero did not disappoint; honoured to have Prof Duncan Mitchell, Emeritus of Wits University visit @MRC_LMB. Born in same town as Sydney Brenner (must be something in the water 🤔), Duncan has monitored 🧠 temp in more species than I know the names of. A physiology legend!😃

Pleased to share my newly published article (from my PhD work) examining the impact of heat on our human brain. Our brain motor activity and cognitive ability are impaired by heat. There could be a brain temperature range optimal for neural function! pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37678507/

Rule of science writing: abbreviations are for the reader, not the writer. Don't use abbreviations to save your own keystrokes, use them to improve comprehension of the text. Thus "DNA" is reasonable; abbreviating study site names is not.

Staggering acceleration of global warming is underway, driven by a huge planetary energy imbalance, which in turn is traced mainly to our Faustian aerosol bargain. Six months more of the acceleration are still to come. See Measuring Stick - mailchi.mp/caa/global-war…

It was great fun getting the opportunity to work with Terrie Williams in the Kruger National Park last week. Looking forward to hearing Terrie give the Knut Schmidt-Nielsen award lecture at IUPS in Frankfurt next year.

If you can’t unequivocally say that Russia is the bad guy in this conflict, you aren’t qualified to discuss foreign policy. Full stop. They invaded a sovereign country and attempted to permanently change their borders by force. In no scenario are they in the right.
