Beyond excited to say my first PhD paper (and first first-author) is out today in nature 🤯. Taking a new approach to key innovations, we show rapidly gaining/losing complex teeth accelerates speciation in fishes. Look out for a longer thread soon…

Yesterday at our Mirsky Day of Geoscience Lecture, Island Prof 🏝🇯🇲 gave an insight into his “Water on Mars research”. It was very interesting and engaging to see how he’s combining geophysical and mathematical models to understand the hydrological behavior on Mars. IU Indianapolis

I think I am finally done building my lab. That was a process and they are right — takes about 3 years and longer with Covid. Stay tuned for papers from experiment now! It’s a nice feeling to be able to now just do the science without the building.

The ebb and flow of Pleistocene glacial cycles is not random—it follows a predictable pattern dictated by the distinct and deterministic influence of Earth’s orbital geometry, according to a new study in Science. Learn more: scim.ag/4kgRNEV

So, let me get this straight. How is a university supposed to combat Anti-Semitism? Via DEI methods or what they claim to be "merit" methods?

Did you know? NASA only uses 15 digits of π for calculating interplanetary travel. At 40 digits, you could calculate the circumference of a circle the size of the visible universe with an accuracy that'd fall off by less than the diameter of a hydrogen atom. #piDay2025

Finally published Science Magazine: Can AI help yield new insights from vast amounts of Earth data? We use large-scale data and neural nets to find the constitutive laws of glacial ice, which differ from commonly assumed forms in conventional models. science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

A study Elsevier provides the first ever mathematical closed-form solution to the random packing problem in 2D for unequally-sized spheres/disks: authors.elsevier.com/a/1kyJZ7QGmTzu4 the analytical solution agrees with the most recent swap-Monte Carlo simulations of Berthier et al.

I’ve had undergrads work full time in my lab each year I’ve been a professor. I am sad that I might not be able to make that happen this summer cuz it’s one of my favorite things to go to work and see them all working together on a scientific problem!
