More than 2 drinks PER WEEK increases risks for breast and other cancers. To reduce breast cancer risk, not only should women cut back on alcohol, they should get to and maintain a healthy body weight, do moderate exercise regularly, and not smoke.

Great to see Manitoba's leadership on free prescription birth control (starting Oct 1). Wab Kinew Manitobans are counting on you to address critical women's health issues. Please lower the #breastscreening age from 50 and have MB join the rest of the country. #mbpoli #40not50

Thanks Megan Ogilvie for raising so many important issues surrounding alcohol sales coming to Ontario corner stores. Could alcohol be one of the key reasons we see a rising incidence in breast cancers in younger women? #onpoli thestar.com/news/ontario/a…

Most women in 🇨🇦 are only offered screening every-other- year. So they don’t have the opportunity for detection of their cancers as early as possible.

FINALLY. Today, at long last, ALL patients in the U.S. will be informed if they have dense breasts after their mammogram. With deep appreciation to fellow advocates who worked tirelessly, some while sick and in treatment, to get this over the finish line. DenseBreast-Info.org

👏👏👏 We’re getting close in 🇨🇦 with density notification, but way behind in annual mammograms starting 40. And WAY behind with supplemental screening with US or MRI for women with #densebreasts. Canadian women: check out mybreastscreening.ca

In 1988, women in BC were sent a letter when they turned 40 encouraging them to start having mammograms. But that stopped many years ago. Now only about 25% of eligible women 40-49 attend. Time to resume sending those letters! vancouversun.com/news/local-new… via The Vancouver Sun

PBS News: "Women are shocked to learn that in dense breasts a 'normal' mammogram report doesn't reliably mean a cancer is not there." I sat with Peabody Award winner Ali Rogan to discuss what all women should know. pbs.org/newshour/show/… DenseBreast-Info.org

But remember, 85% of women who get breast cancer, have no risk factors, so all women need to be screened starting at age 40, ideally annually. And women with dense breasts need supplemental screening, usually with ultrasound, or with MRI depending on their level of risk.

More hugely important research by the U of Ottawa with Statistics Canada: “Early detection is even more important in younger women.” Screening mammography for all women at average risk should start at age 40. Women with dense breasts should also have US or MRI.

So important to find those aggressive cancers as early as possible. Start screening mammograms as soon as you’re eligible where you live, hopefully at age 40. Get supplemental screening (US or MRI) if you have dense breasts, and do breast self exams.

Ditto. And thanks Gloria Macarenko for asking additional questions that allowed me to point out how women are being gouged. Adrian Dix: it’s not a quick fix, but please get the ball rolling. Adjust the fee so more women’s cancers will be found earlier.
