ATSC 3.0 subframe transmitter is finished. Subframes allow for completely different modulation parameters for each PLP (Physical Layer Pipe). In this example, the 1st subframe is 8K FFT, 16QAM and the 2nd subframe is 32K FFT, 256QAM with reduced carriers.

C-Cube CL4010 and CL4020 MPEG-2 encoder chips. Internal code names were E2 and E3. Same processor, just a die shrink on the right. Circa 1995.

New feature added to gr-atsc3, time-aligned frames. Samples are added to the guard interval to make frames exact multiples of 5 milliseconds. #gnuradio #ATSC3

ATSC 3.0 Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM) with gr-atsc3. The second PLP data is zeroed so that the multiplex structure can be seen. It's targeted at low power mobile receivers. Preamble and SBS symbols can't be used since they're not frequency aligned. #atsc3 #gnuradio

Very weird and oddly sad to see $AMD branded Zynq FPGAs, I was hoping they kept the Xilinx brand. I'm happy for the acquisition but sad to see the Xilinx name go away.

The C-Cube CL4010 from 1995. It added MPEG-2 capabilities to the CL4000. It took 12 of these chips in parallel to make a 704x480 adaptive field/frame real-time encoder. Used for DirecTV uplinks (upgrading them from unconstrained MPEG-1). Custom RISC ISA. #ThrowbackThursday

Lots of electric train testing on Caltrain now. Tonight I saw an electric racing a diesel (which is odd because they never run in the same direction normally).
