3 years ago today, local authorities confirmed the first COVID cases in Austin. In my first feature for KUT Austin, I talked with some of Austin's leaders from those early days about how they're using lessons from COVID to prepare for the *next* pandemic. kutne.ws/3mOaAOM

On board as a primary investigator at the center is Dr. Mark E. Escott, who was the face and voice of Austin's COVID response for ~18 months. He talked to me a lot about how he hopes the response to future threats can be more unified between public health, gov, scientists, etc.

I was happy to co-host a workshop this week UT Austin Center for Pandemic Decision Science as a part of the U.S. National Science Foundation-PIPP. Extremely talented scientists from around the globe joined to discuss how to better prevent and prepare for the next threat. Thank you Mayor Adler for speaking!

Did you know? The way to safely view Saturday's eclipse & a total eclipse are different. It's not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection, except during the brief phase of a total eclipse when the Sun is totally blocked(2024). Safety tips next post:

My heart goes out to our Austin Police Department colleagues today. The incident this morning is a reminder that our law enforcement officers risk their lives every day for our community. As a community, we must come together to recognize this terrible loss and better support our officers.

I am happy to support this innovative program Austin Police Department. TxDOT reports 1464 DUI crashes in Travis County in 2022 with hundreds injured and 48 killed. Prevention is the best medicine! Please don't drink and drive!!

Saving lives from sudden cardiac arrest depends on a chain of survival. The bystander CPR, notifying 9-1-1, and AED application makes a huge difference in survival. Learn to save a life and take a cpr class! ATCEMS kxan.com/news/local/aus…

Thank you to Chief of Staff Robin Henderson and her Austin Police Department Officers who saved many lives today in the city by using narcan on overdose victims before ATCEMS and Austin Fire Dept arrived. Today would have been so much more tragic without our APD colleagues. kxan.com/news/local/aus…
