Delighted to have a commissioned paper in this new @BritishAcademy collection, co-written with Jon Winder. #Place-based #histories - especially those #coproduced wth communities - can support place attachment, diversity & inclusion, and wider participation in place policy:

We feature in this discussion paper by our colleague Catherine Clarke & Jon Winder for The British Academy. "These digital platforms, and their crowdsourcing or co-production methodologies, have created a space for diverse communities to tell their own stories". Humap: the storytelling map platform

Children have long played in public spaces. Pieter Bruegel’s painting from 1560 of a Dutch townscape shows all sorts of playful activities taking place. It’s well worth zooming in on the image to see everything that’s going on! #DesignedforPlay #playgroundhistories 2/7

People often think that playgrounds first appeared in the 1920s. In fact, the earliest segregated sites for play in Britain were created in 1846; Peel Park, Salford included swing for girls, swing for boys, gymnasium and skittles ground. #DesignedforPlay #playgroundhistories 3/7

Playground provision increased significantly in the early twentieth century. Only two London County Council parks included dedicated places to play in 1889 - by 1915 thirty children’s gymnasiums had been created. #DesignedforPlay #playgroundhistories 4/7

Today, kids are practically forbidden in the street. But a century ago, the street was the primary locus of kids' play. What happened? & did we lose anything by moving play from public streets into private yards & gated playgrounds? I tackle these Qs in my latest for The Atlantic
