Nearly 300 years ago, the first Black performer to play Juliet was Rachael Baptiste, an Irishwoman also hugely successful as a singer. She performed in Lancashire in the mid-1700s.

First, we calculate Wavelet Coherence as a measure of how each pair of people coordinate. We think this is a good measure of the social interactions going on in the classroom. And careful comparison of the wavelet scores with hand coding of video shows that it is.

We did this for 3 groups of kids - young autistic, older autistic and neurotypical 5 year olds in different lessons. For each group, we can visualise the social interaction network of the lesson. Here the kids (S1-S7) interact and the researchers (R1,R2) are left out.

So overall, this paper gives us a whole new method for tracking and understanding patterns of social interaction in the real world. the wearable sensors are cheap and easy to use in many contexts, so we hope this can open up new opportunities to study human social synchrony
