Moranto speaking again now - asks for a show of hands of how many here had two parents who did not go to university/college. A great many (atypical of social sciences). Echoes Haidt/Lukianoff in calling for more academics from blue collar backgrounds. #HeterodoxConference

Highlights for me of #HeterodoxConference , bearing in mind I didn’t hear many of yesterday’s papers (had work to do) - the papers of Gad Saad , Yascha Mounk , Steven Pinker and Claire Lehmann

McCaffree is talking about how much he admires others here who have really taken risk and followed their convictions. #HeterodoxConference

Some disagreement about the value of peer review. I still think it’s the best system we have access to but it can only be as good as the criteria by which reviewers review. CSJ scholarship does not have ā€œCare about what is trueā€ or ā€œTry to reason soundly.ā€ #HeterodoxConference

An important point made by Francesca Minerva about how editors tend to just go with what reviewers say, and don’t sufficiently scrutinise the *reviews* for ideological bias, etc. #HeterodoxConference

Prof Ian Pace (@drianpace) 's Twitter Profile Photo

One more thought - we need some comprehensive surveys of existing scholarly journals to consider ideological bias and more in these, as part of the process of urging greater viewpoint diversity in academia. #HeterodoxConference

Could not agree more with Kevin McCaffree talking about being demonised & threatened & misrepresented. I too find that I can deal with that provided that people whose thinking & integrity I respect also respect mine. If people I don’t respect respect me, I’d be worried.

Now Eric Kaufmann is wrapping up and presenting the Buckingham Manifesto. He notes the importance not only of getting heterodox opinions published, but also that they are cited and have an impact. #HeterodoxConference

These are the fundamental principles of the #BuckinghamManifesto , presented by Eric Kaufmann at the #HeterodoxConference . He believes some 60s orthodoxies are now looking tired and there is a future for ā€˜post-progressivism’. Also announces some research money secured.

Also noted by Eric Kaufmann - after the fall of the Berlin Wall there was an explosion of new academic writings on nationalism, more recently on populism. But the same has not been true of woke/critical social justice ideology, at least in academic arenas. #HeterodoxConference

Now Eric Kaufmann is wrapping up #HeterodoxConference . All kudos to Eric for making this happen, also to James Tooley for providing the event with institutional support. And to all the rest of the team who have done so much. Then a final statement from James Tooley.

And James Tooley says that here the point has been to reclaim the social sciences from woke capture (fighting talk!) And describing how he first met Eric Kaufmann and saw the potential for the new centre - embodies courage, freedom and truth #HeterodoxConference

I was the first in my family to go to university. Paul Harper-Scott has articulated well what he and I and doubtless many others feel - such a love of study, knowledge, opening new worlds which we didn’t take for granted. But others are playing out their rebellions against this.

Had a great time at the inaugural Heterodox Conference in Buckingham with some of my favourite people. Many thanks to Eric Kaufmann for organising šŸ™

Just left an excellent conference on Heterodox Social Science at U Buckingham. Among the topics: Critical Woke Studies, the attempt to understand why universities & other institutions lost their minds starting around 2010, abandoning liberalism and reason for censorship and
