The Ka-Do-Ha mound complex in Arkansas shows how excavations were often done in the 1800s and early 1900s: straight down from the top of a mound. They have about 7 open excavation pits.

Tobacco was present in the Americas by 4000 BC (perhaps far earlier). By 1 BC tobacco was used by virtually all the tribes in the Americas.

The Tampa, Florida Giant Hoax from "Path of Souls" (2014). This is a really interesting story, but not all the "giant skeleton" reports made in the 1800s and early 1900s were fake, however.

This is a site I have never been to: Brown's Mount, Georgia. The stone wall described in the latter portion of the citation is intriguing. Anyone been there? As I edit the mound encyclopedia I'll post some of the more unusual mound entries in the 3rd Edition.

What do you notice? Bishop, California: a huge basalt outcropping covered with ancient petroglyphs. There’s far more to our prehistoric past in what we now call America than we’ve been told…

Pottery excavated from the mounds at Kolomoki, Georgia. The museum where they were displayed is temporarily closed as it goes through the NAGPRA process or evaluation. I suspect none of these will be displayed again.
