It's really easy to read past millions or billions of dollars without fully processing the magnitude, but this number is really big. It's more than twice all typical federal education spending and ~20% of *all* operating spending on public K-12 in a typical year.

Matt A gentle note, then, that the conversation in Boston hasn't raised the fundamental issue around "unequal resources" in the schools. 1/

Matt The unequal resource that has the greatest impact, by far, is the lifetime of opportunity gaps among BPS students. IOW, the unequal resources come in the door each morning with the students, and leave with them at the end of the day. It's not primarily BPS or alumni funding. 6/

Matt That has many substantial implications for how to successfully increase diversity at these schools. For starters, one that will clearly be required, but no one has raised: The budgets at these schools need to go UP to support the needs of a more diverse student population. 7/7
