It's really easy to read past millions or billions of dollars without fully processing the magnitude, but this number is really big. It's more than twice all typical federal education spending and ~20% of *all* operating spending on public K-12 in a typical year.

Boston needs to start talking ... a full picture of BPS, Tom Keane. Eg, *far* more children in charters, METCO, other selective schools than exam schools. Middle class families leave Boston. All drive concentration of high need students in BPS open enrollment schools. 1/

ICYMI. CDC updated their guidance on surface transmission. Should be the end of 'deep cleaning'. --> risks from surfaces are low --> hand-washing/sanitizer most effective way to address --> cleaning 1x per day is fine if no suspected/confirmed cases cdc.gov/coronavirus/20…

Matt A gentle note, then, that the conversation in Boston hasn't raised the fundamental issue around "unequal resources" in the schools. 1/

Matt The unequal resource that has the greatest impact, by far, is the lifetime of opportunity gaps among BPS students. IOW, the unequal resources come in the door each morning with the students, and leave with them at the end of the day. It's not primarily BPS or alumni funding. 6/

Matt That has many substantial implications for how to successfully increase diversity at these schools. For starters, one that will clearly be required, but no one has raised: The budgets at these schools need to go UP to support the needs of a more diverse student population. 7/7
