I do want to make the point that @joelle_kane is first author on this piece and deserves 98% of the credit. She’s unfortunately not free tonight so I am trying to fill in her large shoes. #JHMChat

A2. Use goals. I always ask all team members (starting with myself) to share one goal for in the hospital (e.g. making rounds more efficient) and one for outside the hospital (e.g. my last was trying be present while attending a concert during a service week). #jhmchat

A2. I’ve recently been using a feelings wheel to help my kids better name and express emotions. But at work, too often I default to I’m “fine” or “good”. Consider using a feelings wheel or list of emotions for a one-word checkin with your team that goes beyond “fine”. #jhmchat

A3. I used to be terrified of saying “I don’t know” to a family – worried they would lose all trust in me.  In reality, families are generally totally fine with us saying it, as long as we have a next step.  Sometimes saying “I don’t know” even increases their trust. #JHMChat

A4. Mistakes are just stories with extra emotional valence – which makes takehome points stickier. If we share a mistake and how it changed our practice, we help trainees 1) remember that point and 2) better recognize the inevitability and value of mistakes. #JHMChat

A4. I can tell you to count your own RR in toddlers because they can hide tachypnea well, or I can tell you about the 4yo I tried to discharge from the ER my intern year. After presenting my attending walked me back to the room and had me count the RR myself – it was 55. #JHMChat

A4. If we’re really committed to helping our trainees have sustainable careers, we need to be better about sharing when we ask for help as the attending. I now try to tell the team when I felt uncertain enough to call a colleague and run a case by them. #JHMChat
