The work of author Michael Lewis offers lessons for the press in how better to cover government. This week’s Second Rough Draft newsletter open.substack.com/pub/dicktofel/…

All that federal data Musk is disappearing creates opportunities for newsrooms— on both the news and business sides. This week’s (early) Second Rough Draft newsletter open.substack.com/pub/dicktofel/…

“A denial of diversity is literally a denial of our national motto. #EPluribusUnum asserts that we aim to craft a unified country (still a worthy goal!), but it also acknowledges that we seek to do so out of the differences we bring to the project.”— @DickTofel

However you feel about “DEI,” we need to renew our agreement that the news business embraces inclusion, equity and diversity. This week’s Second Rough Draft newsletter open.substack.com/pub/dicktofel/…

Wise words (as always) from Richard Tofel "... I want to remind us all that even if “DEI” has become politically incorrect on the right, its elements are critical to a decent society, and fundamentally important in our own business of news." dicktofel.substack.com/p/amid-the-war…

The coverage of Original Sin has stayed mostly on the surface, and almost entirely omitted the responsibility of the press for the Biden debacle. Just out Columbia Journalism Review I look at the book’s omissions and inner contradictions, and what it tells us about journalism. cjr.org/analysis/origi…

Read journalism, politics, & history expert Dick Tofel’s very insightful review of the new Jake Tapper 🦅 & Alex Thompson Original Sin book on Pres. Biden’s ‘23-‘24 health & seeking reelection, + two earlier books covering this, + the press that did so insufficiently. Richard Tofel

Cover-Up in Plain Sight: New books examine how the Biden administration handled the delicate subject of age—but not how the press covered the story, by @DickTofel. cjr.org/analysis/origi…

“Joe Biden failed the country in deciding to seek a second term. But the press also failed in its job to confirm, in undeniable fashion, what the voters already knew. Unlike Biden, journalists will likely get another chance—and must do better.” cjr.org/analysis/origi… Richard Tofel

Great piece. It’s tempting to blame some omissions of Original Sin on a rush job, since reporting began in Nov. — a rapid turnaround for a book with 200 sources and rigorous fact-checking. I’m left wondering why, for a post mortem, the authors felt so rushed.
