We challenged our students to accurately measure out 16 different pendulums, some with only 1mm difference. They rose to the occasion and hereโ€™s a magnificent pendulum wave. Great precision at #DGSScienceClub

For #PancakeDay at #DGSscienceclub, our students learned about surface tension as they tried to make the strongest โ€˜pancake boatโ€™ with only 50g of plasticine. Team Fish managed 70g before their boat sunk.

For #WorldBookDay, we have joined forces with DGSLibrary to find out if the dystopian worlds had a biological reason for evil. Students had to find book information from the library then carry out analytical tests of samples taken from those world.

Celebrating #BSW25 at #DGSScienceClub by making plastic from milk. Did you know over 100yrs ago milk protein was used to make buttons (called milk stone or imitation ivory)? Here are 3 buttons we made today.

Creative chromatography at #DGSScienceClub today. Add felt tip lines to a fluted filter paper, dip the point in water & watch the colours spread out. When dry make into spring flowers or butterflies!

So inspiring for our future scientists to chat with researchers from Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology at #DGSScienceClub today and find out about their projects. Many thanks to Kate Coldwell for visiting us with her colleagues and leading a brilliant outreach session.

Will the egg survive the drop from the top floor? At #DGSScienceClub teams used a limited set of materials to make a strong but lightweight casing for their egg. Well done to everyone whose eggs didn't break!

This week our science technicians have had a little surprise waiting for them every morning when they arrive at work. #Techognition is a week-long affair in our department. Preproom.org

Are the coloured compounds in spring flowers pH indicators? We tested a wide selection of flowers today at #DGSScienceClub today and discovered that most of them are. Well done everyone, especially Anna, who made her own "Universal Indicator" by blending her flower extracts.

Our technicians have been treated to cake and a colourful noticeboard of thank-you notes from our teachers. And everyone got a little crow. ๐Ÿฆโ€โฌ› #Techognition

#DGSScienceClub resumes with a challenge to dissolve a piece of Mg in 60s. Winning teams Isabelle/Olivia, Millie/Elsie and DnA all achieved 58s. We learnt to be methodical and meticulous, as evidenced here using a light to ensure all Mg has dissolved b4 stopping the timer.

We made used of the heat generated from resistance of a wire and shaped polystyrene/foam into sculptures. Here are our winning entries: a bird with a hat, a wildlife garden and parts of an atom. Which is your favourite? #DGSScienceClub #STEAM

Who can make the best flyer? What's the best number of blades? What's the optimum angle for them? Well done to Team Cutie Potatoes whose flyer travelled 3.45m at #DGSScienceClub today. (Special mention to the 6th form helpers whose flyer went over 5m!)

How much glucose is in our garlic bulbs? They were crushed with dH2O & the extract tested with Benedicts. The solutions all turned yellow, but it's hard to tell if they had more or less glucose than the garlic cloves from which we grew them. More work needed. #DGSScienceClub

The #DGSScienceClub Diagnostic Challenge: visit 7 different "hospital depts" & complete a challenge at each one, to find a code letter. Rearrange the 7 letters for the name of a disease. Well done teams who diagnosed MEASLES & thanks to all our helpers for staffing the depts.

Visitors from industry bring STEM to life at #DGSScienceClub. Many thanks to Juliet & Nisha from Amentum who told us how engineers work in nuclear waste disposal & then challenged us to move "waste" using limited supplies without "contamination". Great ideas & teamwork everyone!
