Seals Cave, Kirkmaiden William Todd's Statistical Account of the parish (1854) records that it is "much frequented by seals and hence called Selk-Co." CO is Scots 'cave'. The Scots for 'seal' is SELCH (-ch as in 'loch'), more familiar in the diminutive form SELKIE.
