Currently reading "The Flight of the Iguana" by David Quammen. A nice collection of essays that were written in the 1980s. Some are obviously out of date (such as one arguing that orang-outans might be more closely related to us than chimps). But still an entertaining read.

New polar bear paper. Largely confirmation of what we thought. Evolution & species divergence is less like a tree & more like a vine: lots of intertwining over time until new species can't produce viable offspring. Polar bears & brown bears haven't been separated long enough yet.

Study supports a close association between perch structure & patterns of phenotypic convergence across Bradypodion forming 3 ecomorphs (forest, shrub, & "little brown chameleons" [LBCs]) with convergence based on habitat similarities rather than ancestry. academic.oup.com/cz/advance-art…

Just in time before Christmas 🎅🏻🧬 Very happy to share this work, where we identified several horizontal gene transfers between fishes. This is a first for vertebrates (except for the anti-freeze protein example) ! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

The first many-analysts study in ecology is finally published! 🥳🙌 300+ coauthors and 5+ years, this was a massive effort by Elliot Gould Dr Hannah Fraser Tim Parker and co. Open access 👉 bmcbiol.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.11…

I finally published our new paper embracing the heterogeneity of whole genomes for understanding evolutionary processes! And it's on #snakes! Always a plus! Huge thank you to my collaborators! sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Happy 2nd annual International Chameleon Day! May 9th is International Chameleon Day, which was launched in 2024 to highlight the remarkable diversity of chameleon species and shed light on the challenges they face in the wild! #internationalchameleonday #chameleondaymay9
