As I contemplated heating the oven for Shepherds’ Pie followed by Eve’s Pudding, I knocked up a batch of Mary Berry’s ‘Very Best Scones’. They turned out deliciously light.

When British public transport works well it’s glorious. Left Linlithgow at 2pm by train. Up the windy steps at Waverley and on a busy at 2.20pm. Home at the manse 2.35pm. Some people won’t even have had their first sausage roll at the funeral purvey.
