If Britain wants to lead in AI, then it'll need billion pound data centres. Big tech, like Amazon, is ready to invest but they need reliable clean power. Nuclear is the obvious solution. We need to do everything possible to make it cheap and fast to deploy.

It’s 2029. Half your ISA has grown at 11%/year, getting you 51% gains since 2025. Your govt-mandated ā€œBritISAā€ half has grown at 4%/year, getting you a modest 17%. Disappointing, but at least some City traders are a bit richer thanks to you. Anyway, time to go and vote.

Very interesting comments on AI from JD Vance (abridged below). Apparently JD: • has read AI 2027 • is optimistic re econ side of AI; has worries re non-econ side • worries about effects on cyber/etc • legit unsure if we could pause if AI gets out of control, b/c race w/ CCP

Demis Hassabis doesn't think we're in a simulation, at least not the way Bostrom framed it. ā€œI don't think this is some kind of game.ā€ But he does believe reality may be computational at its core. AlphaGo and AlphaFold model nature too well to ignore.

Even as someone who's already pretty sold on the idea that there's a new and rapidly growing cohort of not-quite-but-almost functionally illiterate people out there, this piece is full of pretty jaw-dropping stuff.

Everythingism must be stopped. At this rate I'm going to start threading the worst examples of policies which try to do everything, everywhere, all at once. 1/

I just got back from Japan, where a single person barging through the barrier like this would be inconceivable, let alone a widespread pattern of it. Is there no incentive for staff/police to jump in and fine people?

ā€œOne report from a focus group quoted Gary, a regional sales manager, saying that what the country needs is a coup d’état. It is not a good sign when Gary, sales manager, feels in the mood for revolution.ā€

New York still behind London as a cultural centre – even for fine dining & luxury hotels – despite its far greater wealth.

Great Wall Street Journal piece today by Molly Ball on how abundance has made contact with the world, in the last 12 weeks. It's been a really wonderful experience talking about the ideas in the book—hearing what's connected, what hasn't, where we're right, what we missed.
