My aquatint etching ‘Together but Not.’ This photo is from a buyer who got it framed with an oak frame. I usually frame my work with black, but I thought this turned out very nice.

When someone is struggling or hurting— be quiet. Listen. Ask question. Resist the human urge to fix it, say it could be worse, or to find the bright side. You have no idea how appreciated it will be.

People don’t want advice. They’re desperate to be heard by a calm person who doesn’t try to fix it. They already know what they’re supposed to do— they just want you to listen.

Tonight, I feel that I destroyed two paintings by overworking them. It’s ok, because it means that I’m pushing myself to discover something new and not playing it safe. The notion that all works come out ok is a folly! Build it up and tear it down, then do it all over again!
