New Year's Day marks the 40th anniversary of the first mobile phone call in the UK. I'll be talking about the impacts of smartphones tomorrow morning on BBC Radio 5 Live (between 10 and 11 - UK time).

Does anyone else remember Britannia Music Club (BMC)? I was a member briefly and can (almost) remember what CDs I got for £1 each as part of the introductory offer. BMC went the same way as Blockbuster, but it feels like there would now be space for a vinyl equivalent!

Remember UK Research and Innovation are signatories of DORA (sfdora.org) so there is zero point banging on about how you will publish in x journal due to y metric or imaginary prestige factor. It's a waste of words and no one cares.

When it comes to understanding technology, scholars need to be experimenting with said technology before writing about it or conducting research. I suspect this provides an ethnographic understanding that filters into everything else. It's obvious when this is missing.
