A few years ago I took my now-retired Congressman for lunch. The deal was I would contribute, but he had to buy me lunch and answer all of my questions. We talked about Gerrymandering. His explanation was: "Both parties do it, because it is too expensive to fight EVERY seat

You know how sometimes your system will be borked, and merely STARTING Task Manager scares the system into getting better for no explicable reason? I'd like to take credit for that cool feature. I'd like to, but it's not an actual feature, its just the way the Windows message

25Gbe networking for the win! I couldn't tell you why TrueNAS can only write at 1GB/sec when it's using NVMe cache in front of 30 spindles, but that's ZFS for ya. My favorite filesystem! Too bad it operates on a geological timescale.

Hot Tip for Non-Techicals dealing with programmers: The next time you're in a meeting and the software developers are complaining that something is impossible, just say: "You know, it could be done with SetWindowsHookEx()" You won't be wrong :-)

They are asking people to delete old emails because that will free up space on the servers, and that will somehow lead to less water use. The process of browsing, selecting, and deleting files involves CPU and network activity, which would temporarily increase energy and water

Having been alive then, I have a deeply ingrained eye-roll reaction to most 1970s design choices. But for some reason, I completely love this room.

In 1939 an estimated 750,000 cats and dogs, a quarter of England's pet population, were euthanized due to an aside in a pamphlet noting it as an option for people unable to take their pets with them when evacuating.

I know a wide range of actual geniuses. Some were precocious children raised by the best tutors. Some were rebellious teenagers that squandered their youth chasing skirts an racing cars. Attempts to say that all geniuses "all" share something is usually reserved for huxters

As someone who's helped write an operating system AND installed the front glass of a GMC pickup truck, let me assure you they were equally challenging tasks. Of course with operating systems, you get 3 tries.

I once considered using a hotel room hottub. But being autistic, I'm a little fastidious. So I got bleach from housekeeping and ran a rinse cycle. The amount of "black stuff" that dislodged convinced me immediately never to use a hotel room hottub...

Unlike The Pretty Good Gastby, Animal Farm is one of the few books they make you read in high school that's worth re-reading as an adult.

Given the pricing, it's hard not to read this as people being willing to pay more for the chance at a male driver. Or what am I missing? Or did I get trolled?

You know what killed Reddit? The mods. I was never "on" Reddit. I tried. But it was toxic people reinforcing toxic behaviors that led to a toxic and authoritarian environment, not unlike X before the acquisition. I prefer an algorithm. Algorithms you can reason with.
