⚡️Some personal news: After 4 amazing years, today is my last day at Devex. I'm grateful for the opportunity to create journalism with some of the best minds in international development reporting. I've learnt so much from this small newsroom that punches way above its weight. +

I disagree profoundly with this man about almost everything, and he’s been part of a movement which has done this country enormous damage, but I would not wish this on a soul, and I do admire him for speaking openly about it.

Earlier this year we wrote that almost half of humanitarians thought wholesale change was needed in the sector. I'm interested in writing about why. If you have any thoughts, I'd love to hear - either here or via DM. devex.com/news/survey-fi…

Two sets of ODA stats have been dropped in the last fortnight. They paint an unbelievably bleak picture - £3.7bn being spent in the UK on domestic refugee costs, FCDO's share dropped to 59.8%. More cuts to programme spend. Read more here - bond.org.uk/news/2023/04/t…

I found this a fascinating conversation about how we find new and better ways to fund development. devex.com/news/the-excha…

I chatted to Naina Subberwal Batra at AVPN about her thoughts on philanthropy. She was pretty frank. It's a sector that needs to do better. devex.com/news/is-develo…

Next Friday I'll be hosting an event on how we get the sector to put its money where its mouth is on localization. I'll be talking to people who've helped NGOs in the global north take practical steps to localize their practices: devex.com/events/27?utm_…

Last week I went to a party and someone asked me what I did. When I said I write about aid, he immediately said he was worried about NGOs spending too much on overhead. It's a pervasive concern. But here's why I think it's wrong. devex.com/news/are-us-la…

A hill I'll die on: "data is" not "data are" English has 3 types of noun: singular, plural, uncountable. Loaf. Loaves. Bread. Only plurals use "are" Data is plural (of datum) in Latin. But this ain't Latin In English, data's uncountable. "25 data" = nonsense. Hence, "data is".

One of the fundamental concepts behind development is the idea of money flowing from wealthy nations to low- and middle-income countries (thread🧵).

The south now pays more in debt than it gets in grants and loans. This seems like a fundamental problem to me. Rich countries should be funding poor countries, not the other way around.

Building new homes not only tackles the homelessness crisis, and makes homes more affordable for all of us, but provides loads of jobs. It’s the most slam dunk, win win policy imaginable. Doesn’t even cost govt anything; after you build houses you can sell them or rent them out.
