Finra issued a statement that specifically says not to use those daily shares shorted numbers to calculate short interest. They does not include buy-to-covers & include agency broker sales that are marked as short sales even though they are actually client long sales.

finra.org/rules-guidance… "Some market participants mistakenly conclude that the bi-monthly short interest data is understated because the Daily File reflects short sale volume that is much larger than what is reported as short interest." They are related they are not correlated.

Yes, the short sale does give downside pressure to the stock's price. A stock borrow is executed to settle the short trade. Why would you need to borrow stock again? You already settled your short trade! Stock borrows are settlement actions, have no effect on trade date prices

We don't look at shares on loan because that number can include financing trades and broker to broker trades but not does include broker rehypothecation of margined shares to cover short sale settlement.

FTD's can be caused by both long and short settlement issues - brokers cover them using stock borrows and pas on costs to their long and short share holders who are failing
