Something I've learned while in law school is about the social construction of crime. I work in a legal clinic on wage theft cases, where employers have "improperly paid" workers by not paying, paying below min wage, withholding overtime, paid sick time, etc. 1/

Defunding the police sounds radical until you realize realize we’ve been defunding education for years.

What we need is a total divestment of the police. Abolition. Not reform.

Here are some things that abolition does not mean: 1) reform 2) a new kind of police 3) getting rid of police and leaving jails, prisons, military & capitalism in tact 4) a one time event 5) something the capitalist state can enact as a policy fix, or hold as a process

Here are some things that are a part of an abolitionist process: 1) defunding police & other non-reformist reforms 2) communities developing new modes of non-carceral/non-punitive justice (transformative justice, etc) 3) developing new ways to prevent harm in community
