St. Josephine Bakhita, born in Sudan in 1869, was kidnapped at age nine and sold into slavery. At 14, she was bought by an Italian consul whose kindness led to her conversion to Christianity. Her memorial, February 8th, is an occasion to pray for victims of human trafficking.

The great Feast of the Resurrection on Easter Sunday is the culmination of Holy Week, during which the church celebrates the mysteries of salvation accomplished by Christ in the last days of his life. The seven weeks from Easter to Pentecost are celebrated as one great feast day.

It is with great sadness that the Catholic Women’s League of Canada received the news of the death of Pope Francis. Our first response is gratitude to God for the life and ministry of His Holiness. May he rest in peace.
