Never thought I'd publish a paper about closed timelike curves, but they turn out to clarify what entanglement can do for quantum metrology. Now out in Physical Review Letters! journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/1…

10 years ago today I was elected as parent governor of Highdown School and 4 years ago I became Chair of Governors of that fantastic school. It has not always been easy, but it has always been rewarding. Many schools struggle to recruit governors, so please consider volunteering.

Anyone out there with a Quantum Design OptiCool: Do you have a sample mounting / chip carrier scheme for simultaneous optical interrogation and electronic measurements with which you are happy?

Adding neutrinos to an existing nucleosynthesis recipe can account for the puzzling existence of neutron-deficient heavy nuclei. The required conditions prevail in binary neutron star mergers and rare types of magnetically intense supernovae. physics.aps.org/articles/v17/s…

My latest: CERN is pushing to build a new 90km megacollider. Germany, which contributes more than 20% of CERN’s budget, says it “cannot support funding of the project at this point” nature.com/articles/d4158…

Researchers have succeeded in recasting the discrete dynamics of a network as a continuous time series, thereby making the network’s behavior potentially more predictable. go.aps.org/3xweZvj

Earlier today I tapped my phone to check the time. It said 17:28, which instantly brought back to my mind a paper I'd written in 1990 about the x-ray binary star system MXB 1728-34. adsabs.harvard.edu/full/1990MNRAS…

The Mpemba effect is the surprising observation that warm water can freeze faster than cold water. Three research teams have explored quantum analogs of this effect, with implications for quantum thermodynamics physics.aps.org/articles/v17/1…
