Big thanks to Bill McKibben for sharing my AARP piece in his newsletter. 🙏 It tells the story of Martha Shaw, 84, who lost everything in a hurricane goosed by climate warming & rising seas. She's since been through 2 more. billmckibben.substack.com/p/a-thing-to-t… aarp.org/home-family/yo…

Now the biggest Hakai Magazine news of the week... In January, Hakai will join forces with bioGraphic. This means more great environmental journalism focused on oceans, coasts, and biodiversity. But to get off the ground, we need your help and donations! biographic.com/hakai-magazine…

Hawaii has more cesspools per capita than any other state. Lots of leaky septic tanks too. The untreated wastewater they release is killing the state's already fragile coral reefs, threatened by ocean warming. tinyurl.com/3ejhaehw #Hawaii #Oceans Honolulu Civil Beat Pulitzer Center

On Thanksgiving, I'm thinking of people I know enduring hardships. One is Yuyu Dong, a journalist and Harvard University Nieman Fellow detained by China. I wrote about him in my book #AtTheEdgeOfEmpire. His family expects a verdict on Friday. His case is getting more attention in the US.

Statement by family of Chinese journalist Dong Yuyu after news of the verdict in his national security trial. This is sad news. The Dong’s are a wonderful family. Yuyu should not be subjected to 4.5 more years of prison on such insubstantial, false charges docs.google.com/document/u/0/d…

China sends a message to the world with this harsh sentencing — telling them that anyone engaging in people-to-people exchanges could be labeled a spy. Dong Yuyu, 62, was a respected journalist and Harvard University fellow doing ordinary meetings with diplomats and foreign journalists.
