I've been teaching with Canvas for 10 years, and this is the first semester I've actually used the gradebook correctly (i.e., put "EX" in unsubmitted optional assignments, have it weigh assignments accurately, and drop the lowest quiz/discussion post scores).

This is why there’s a case for Ivy League accelerationism. Listen to this idiot and how he talks and then realize that his prescription is just ‘be rich and well connected.’ All fine and nothing ground breaking but we just can’t have ppl talking like this in this tone anymore.

This is a good thread. I try to avoid e textbooks with “engaged learning assignments.” I know it’s not a popular position but I’m really convinced old fashioned reading and lecture/discussion is the best way to get students to learn

I had a blast chatting with Lauren Lassabe Shepherd on her American Campus Podcast. We discussed my book, Major Trade-Offs, out now with UChicagoPress buzzsprout.com/2396665/episod…

This article doesn't necessarily get into why the Mississippi surge happened, but it touches on a topic that I think is really important - we overlook basically anything Southern states do well b/c it doesn't fit elite cultural narratives. educationdaly.us/p/mississippi-…

I wrote about Biden and the new book. As the reporting in "Original Sin" makes clear: this story is bigger than just the 2024 campaign. It was more than a year or two of decline. We need to confront the truth: Joe Biden never should have been president of the United States. 🧵

A sad thing about careerism in college is that it's premised on a falsehood. You can major in the liberal arts, have fun in school, and succeed in the labor market. My book, Major Trade-Offs bit.ly/3RBzZr8, directly takes on this myth and others nytimes.com/2024/09/24/opi…

The 119th Congress is less than five months old. In that time, three House Democrats have passed away in the middle of their terms.

super cool that republicans have an extra couple votes to spare on the biggest transfer from the poor to the rich in memory because democrats feel entitled to that extra bit of pomp and circumstance you get when you die in office

It may sound harsh, but some of the Geriatric Democrats clinging to power might only respond to shame. If they see their peers getting dragged instead of honored when they die in office, maybe they’ll finally consider stepping aside before it’s too late.

Every new piece of tech seems designed to make us illiterate. Education and literacy are privileges we've come to take for granted, but our ancestors fought for them because they knew an ignorant people is not a free people. Whoever can prevent you from thinking rules over you.

I suspect traditional achievers outnumber weird intellectuals in the academy bc (1) grad school admissions became more competitive and (2) publishing standards became more uniform. Both require fitting a very specific mold to be successful.

we're honestly so cooked. how is this not the headline and the only thing that matters. and instead everyone is desperate to pretend they're modern and forward thinking by insisting you use AI in every assignment
