Why can't these viruses be friends? In a new study from her PhD MRC-Uni of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research , Anna Sims shows that #SARSCoV2 infections segregate into distinct microdomains as they spread. But why? (1/N) journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/jv…

How to find fantastic new #RNAs? The J2 antibody is the gold standard to detect, map & enrich dsRNAs. Co-led by Bou-Nader lab, Kevin Juma, Ankur Bothra & Steve Leppla’s lab, we visualize how J2 recognizes dsRNA and define its epitope, specificity & bias. doi.org/10.1101/2025.0….

2nd is the aforementioned brilliant preprint from Corcoran Lab. It’s a deep dive into all things N*, & every other paragraph drops some new, delightful discovery. biorxiv.org/content/10.110… 15/34

Both studies made THE crucial experiment: testing viruses with the WT N* TRS against ones with identical AA sequences but synonymous mutations ablating the N* TRS. 16/34

The Mulloy preprint delved deeper into the mechanisms N* employs to stymie innate immune responses. In a series of experiments, they show that N*’s power derives from its ability to bind dsRNA. For reasons not entirely understood, N* binds dsRNA much more strongly than N. 19/34

But there's more to N*'s advantage than just IFN antagonism. Even in cells that lack an IFN response, N*-expressing viruses outcompete N*-lacking viruses despite containing identical nucleocapsid AA sequences. 20/34
