Happy #IYC2025 OTD, 1884 The Manchester Ship Canal, funded by Manchester businesses including considerable amounts from the Co-operative Wholesale Society, opened.  The first vessel to unload its cargo on the opening day was the SS Pioneer, belonging to the CWS. #IYC2025

Many of the men in that photo will have been called up by local draftboards, who were made up of non Co-op business leaders, who excused their own employees. Many of those men will not have survived the 1st WW. Some will have supported the creation of Co-operative Party in 1917.
