re-reading Tolkien's LOTR trilogy one can't help noticing how often Tolkien equates evil with the destruction or maiming of trees - indeed I believe he alludes to this himself in one of his letters

though it'll be a few years afore I can make it happen, seven years on from finishing my MA in History I've finally decivisely determined on an emphasis and thesis subject for my PhD, and thereby become sure I -do- wish to pursue one...sometime in the next decade
