Sea otters maintain remnants of healthy kelp forest amid sea urchin barrens. Our study published today in #PNAS is now available online! PNASNews news.ucsc.edu/2021/03/kelp-f… via UC Santa Cruz UC Santa Cruz Science UCSC SciCom UCSC Grad Division UCSC_CoastalSciPol Monterey Bay Aquarium USGS
Just finished a dreamy kelp-scape map illustration for the EEB Consilience Art-Science Gallery run by star undergrad Ishana Shukla to show the difference in morphology and distribution of two ecotypes of giant kelp for Sara T. Gonzalez's dissertation research. #sciart
Managed retreat means relocating to reduce risks, like sea-level rise. Our new paper in Water MDPI finds that communication, property ownership, & stakeholder values contribute to how managed retreat plans were received in coastal California communities mdpi.com/2073-4441/13/6…

“Kelp, a #seaweed more often thought of as a nuisance by fishermen, is emerging as a potentially lucrative crop, hailed for its many uses as a miracle food to an ingredient in bioplastics to a way to feed beef cattle.” Read more via The Boston Globe: bit.ly/3zewFa1
Different parts of #kelp are mini ecosystems with different #microbiomes. New work by Matt at the Hakai Institute now published: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jp… UBCBiodiversity UBC Oceans (also found at ubcoceans.bsky.social)

Whole-genome sequencing reveals that the two ecomorphs of giant kelp,“pyrifera” and “integrifolia,” are genetically distinct and evolved through different trajectories in the Northern vs Southern Hemisphere. Read more in our recent paper in Evolution Journal: academic.oup.com/evolut/advance…
Thanks Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) for this fun opportunity to engage with people about kelp!
Had an amazing time at the ISAP Phycology conference in scenic Porto meeting algae enthusiasts from around the world, reconnecting with colleagues, and exploring the algae of northern Portugal!
The giant #kelp ecomorphs, Macrocystis pyrifera and M. integrifolia, are morphologically distinct even when cultivated side-by-side! They also appear to be reproductively isolated. Are these “morphs” actually separate species? Read more in Ecosphere esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10…
