Third blackout of the day now in the neighborhood where I live in Havana… in other parts of Cuba, it’s far worse.

Days after officials warned of “a grave” energy crisis, much of Havana and Cuba are again without power today. Since yesterday, power off about half the time in my neighborhood. Other parts of the island have it far worse.

Just in: island-wide blackout in Cuba after one of the country’s main power plants went offline.

Cubans waiting for the power to come back as the island’s electrical grid went down for the 4th time in a year. There are power outages in most neighborhoods every day here but an unannounced nationwide blackout is far more worrying.

Assata Shakur died Thursday in Havana of “health problems and advanced age,” per Cuba’s Foreign Ministry. The FBI had placed a $2 million reward on the fugitive following her escape from prison and clandestine arrival to Cuba.

Not the catastrophic danger we feared would take place in Santiago de Cuba but for anyone who lost a roof or had water damage in their home it’s heartbreaking and will take a long time to recover from.

Cuba’s countryside in the east has been very hard hit. Sugarcane and banana plants down everywhere. Many farmers with damaged or destroyed homes.
