Two geese on the other side of the river have four goslings egg-fresh and fluffy shades of grey-yellow; one parent spots me looking and stretches out a threatening neck, opening beak in a near-silent hiss; above every bud has burst on the willow tree, and bluetits in the branches

By the boathouses is a decoy kite-on-a-pole, probably to scare sparrows out of eaves; a short pace down the riverbank, above the canoe slipway, an actual Red Kite banking and swooping against a stiff spring breeze, mirroring its movements with feisty get-off-my-territory attitude

Yesterday we stood under the bridge impatient at a near imperceptible twittering teasing us from the broad concrete supports under the bypass bridge; until first one, then a small scatter of swallows exited, entered the roost, swerving wide to prove they had no fear of us, spring

The park is like a wedding; generous blossom garlands of green and white on every branch, drifts of pink and white chestnut flowerfall at my feet, soft breeze blowing birdsong over green, and above all the green the steady call of sparrows, pigeons, crows, birth, marriage, death.

It's a mast year in the lime trees; and among the lime green leaves lime green parakeets are muttering and fidgeting, occasionally breaking off to sweep a noisy circuit over the rooftops. On every other branch, storm dark jackdaws are gathered, flicking wings, chatting conspiracy

A scroffly teen heron has plonked itself on the treeperch over the river, is perched obsessively ruffling its way through every tatty halfgrown feather its massive uncontrolled punky quiff jiggling with each annoyed beakcombing through feathers that just. will. not. sit. right.

A young magpie kicking up the most enormous fuss in the sidestreet by the cutthrough to the shopping centre, hard to see about what till eyes drift up to see a slight summer kitten sat atop the wall above it, staring down in fascination, the tip of a tabby tail twitching slightly

I open curtains to a vast waddly pigeon in the garden, delicately pecking at the tiny seeds in the rough fluff of the Red Valerian I've not had the heart to cut back as its deep roots are among the few things in the crispy dry long enough to puzzle water up out of the springline
