It’s always “the Bible must be taken literally,” until Jesus says “bring good news to the poor, health to the sick, set prisoners free, liberate the oppressed, and forgive debts (year of jubilee).”

Idaho educators & school leaders recently learned that Idaho public schools will receive $115 million less than was promised. I just now signed a petition calling on Brad Little to keep his promise & take action to fix this problem. Sign here: actionnetwork.org/petitions/tell…

We forget that anything done in the name of God that does not bear his character through and through is not of Him at all. In our forgetting, we are more loyal to the words of humans than to the commandments of God.

I’d rather have politicians who work towards the common good of all people, especially the poor and vulnerable, making no mention of Christianity or the Bible than politicians who constantly give lip service to Christianity and the Bible while ignoring the poor and vulnerable.

Jesus took up a cross out of love for the world. Anyone who claims to follow him but wants to take up a weapon, a gavel, a flag, or a government against others in order to dominate and control anyone who doesn’t believe the same way they do is using his name in vain.

We must never assume that someone who is gifted verbally and has theological knowledge is spiritually wise and mature.  Sometimes that leader is power hungry and self-serving, working the system and the people in it to feed him/herself.

No matter the words used to describe it or how fast it is growing, a system is ungodly if it is not governed by truth and love. ANYTHING done in the name of God that does not bear His character throughout is actually not of Him.

If you take the Bible extremely literally about human sexuality, but not about feeding the hungry, bringing good news to the poor, liberating the oppressed, forgiving debts, bringing health to the sick, or loving your neighbor, please don’t act like you take the Bible seriously.

If your definition of religious freedom only applies to us Christians, then you don't believe in religious freedom. You believe in religious tyranny. The only government that can guarantee religious freedom is a government free from religious control, including Christianity.

Rev. Benjamin Cremer (@brcremer) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Imagine not wanting the government to infringe on your freedoms as a Christian while simultaneously working to have the government infringe on the freedoms of others in the name of Christianity and refusing to see this as a contradiction.

I will not stop saying this until Christian Nationalism is relegated to the fringes of American society and discourse: Christian Nationalism is the single greatest threat to the American Constitution and our government of the people, by the people, and for the people.

A Christianity that needs political bullies and tyrants to enforce its values is a Christianity that got its values from someone other than Jesus.
