Anonymous post: We've received a reference for a teacher candidate noting they've been on medical leave since being placed on a support plan. We're now wondering โ€” should we proceed with the interview, or is it appropriate to withdraw the offer? Has anyone navigated a similar

HeadteacherChat So much bullying occurs in teaching sometimes by headteachers, especially when teachers start getting expensive. I would give the teacher a chance ๐Ÿ˜Š

Probably an outstanding teacher on UP3 being bullied out to be replaced by cheaperโ€ฆ if you don't judge for yourself then you're just as bad.

HeadteacherChat Quite concerning you'd consider withdrawing? Someone's been in a toxic school and been made sick, does that mean they have no future in teaching? Interview them, like anyone else, and pick the best candidate on the day. Why would you do anything different? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

HeadteacherChat Good question, but thereโ€™s all sorts of worries around that reference. Go ahead and judge for yourself, as the candidates experience was sufficient for you to seek a reference, asking the question โ€˜why did you leave your last schoolโ€™.

UP3 Teacher with a disability, exceptional wider contribution to the school including a road safety campaign. Student mentor. Part of the best teaching practice group who NQTs observe. Outstanding appraisals & lesson observations, local Hero nominations, picked to meet Prince

HeadteacherChat Do you trust the writer of the reference? References can be dishonest. Especially good ones if someone wants rid of a person in a position of responsibility. One HT even told me they'd done it - during an inspection!

HeadteacherChat You've got an experienced teacher there, one unwilling to be bullied. Give them the job, some autonomy and respect and your students will flourish under their guidance.

HeadteacherChat Please give this teacher a chance. There are some vindictive leaders who give staff bad references just because they can. The use of support plans in education also needs addressing. Many are given wrongly to UPS teachers or those whose faces donโ€™t fit.
