The part where she protects Ariel by shouting a profanity at Caliban before blasting him with a laser gun is the best bit, apparently:

Some lovely tributes to Nick Kingsbury yesterday at the memorial service in the chapel Trinity College in terms of both his rowing and signal processing. Fascinating discussion afterwards with Dame Sally Davies, Trinity Master's partner about haematology and fluid mechanics.

Thanks to Richard Hodgkinson and Rob Poole for inviting me to give a talk at the winter meeting of the BSR: bsr.org.uk/events/bsr-202… . Great to meet new people and congrats to Ian Frigaard University of British Columbia for the annual award.

Japanese colleagues who like their rugby might enjoy this article on the game between Japan U19 and Saracens U19 at the weekend. The photo shows the 2 squads after the game. My nephew (fly half) is front row, 6th on the right of the Sarries' players. andrugby.com/2025/03/17/hig…

Excellent UKTC meeting St John's College, Cambridge on Monday and Tuesday this week. A fascinating range of talks where UK HPC resources were used to underpin flow simulations. Thanks to Andy Wheeler for all the local organization and Sylvain Laizet for putting together such a great programme.

In this paper, Rufus Dickinson develops a method for fluid-filament interaction modelling without the expense of FE modelling the filament (with Alessandro Palmeri & Tim Marjoribanks); useful if your focus is on the flow: doi.org/10.1016/j.jflu…

In this new paper in Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Juan & George Imperial Aeronautics study small scale dynamics over a NACA airfoil. Nice to see applications of some concept from my JFM(2018) in aeronautics: dx.doi.org/10.1017/jfm.20…

Academic rankings are all a bit silly, but possible retrospective vindication from scholargps.com of my decision as an undergrad to head off to Canada for my MSc on avalanches:

In our new paper in Physical Review Fluids Maurizio and I define a network for turbulence not using physical coordinates but in the space of the invariants. There are some cool new dynamics emphasised. Thanks to The Leverhulme Trust & Michael Wilczek for support. doi.org/10.1103/PhysRe…

Only 20 minutes to go until I brutalise the French language in my seminar. I stopped studying French at 17 yrs and the last seminar in France was 16 years ago when I was 36. Hence, estimate of half-life appearing soon.

Over my time in Lyon, I have learnt that the French for "eigenvalues" is "valeurs propre". Unfortunately, therefore, "singular values" is the rather boring "valeurs singulieres". What nobody can then tell me is the French for "pseudoeigenvalues". Perhaps "pseudovaleurs propre"?

Using the network proposed in dx.doi.org/10.1103/PhysRe…, Maurizio and I looked for natural groupings of nodes for the Lagrangian dynamics of turbulence and found that including non-normality was key (see sketch of extended Q-R space). Out now in PhysicaD doi.org/10.1016/j.phys…

We have 2 new MSc programmes recruiting for 2026 LboroABCE WEDC. They should interest graduates wanting a career in sustainable water management and applied data analytics. Tim Marjoribanks is director for the former and me for the latter. Clear links to our UNESCO Chair in IMRR.
