On Friday I spoke at a CERN workshop on gender and high energy physics. I shared the work of Institute of Physics’ Juno Award, the The 1752 Group and other evidence-based institutional programs. The head of theory CERN gave a 30 minute Damore-esque manifesto against #womeninSTEM.

I just met a little girl on the train and we were chit chatting until I said I am a scientist. Her eyes lit up and she said she wants to be a scientist too when she grows up 🀩 Even though this story sounds too good to be true it did actually happen!!! 1/n

THREAD: Following our #BlackLivesMatter tweet on Monday, many members of our community have been in touch to ask - rightfully - what we are doing to help fight racism and inequality at Imperial and better-support our Black students and staff

Are there exponential advantages in using quantum machines to learn about the physical world?🎯 We establish the affirmative through rigorous proofs + physical experiments on the Sycamore quantum processor in arxiv.org/abs/2112.00778. [πŸ“œ1/10]

Check out our work on implementing two different logical CNOT gates on two different #QEC codes. In the process, we found a logical CNOT outperforming the physical qubit CNOT! So awesome to work with the great people and technology at Quantinuum! arxiv.org/abs/2208.01863

They're all breakthroughs. Eventually, one last breakthrough will get us to practical quantum advantage and get all the credit. But before that, all the other advancements get us closer to the final push arxiv.org/abs/2210.08039 arxiv.org/abs/2211.06703

QEC has gone beyond break even! Logical error rate of the encoded information is for the first time higher than a bare reference rate. Paper by Volodymyr Sivak and collaborators YaleQuantumInstitute: arxiv.org/abs/2211.09116 1/5

Scientists from Yale University managed to improve the lifetime of an actively error-corrected qubit beyond the lifetime of the best passive qubit encoded in the system. 1/7 arxiv.org/abs/2211.09116

A thread on knots. Every knot K has a corresponding Jones polynomial V(t), a Laurent polynomial in one complex variable. Computing the Jones is hard. The Jones is a knot invariant: if V neq V', then K and K' are topologically inequivalent. 1/6
