Today we honour the people who had no choice but to leave home because of war, violence and persecution, and those who host and support them. No better way to do so than celebrate #WorldRefugeeDay in Africa, where displacement is a big challenge but solidarity is a shared value.

The idea that the Global South must choose between development and the fight against climate change is a Western-leaning stance. Peoples’ perceptions rather align with the scientific community’s warning: there cannot be development without effective fight against #ClimateChange.

Our Global Report 2023 is out! It highlights the results achieved by UNHCR and partners as we responded to the needs of a record number of forcibly displaced and stateless people. This wouldn't have been possible without our donors' support. Find out: bit.ly/3VN2TqY

When a crisis strikes and people flee their homes, UNHCR is there to respond. When people face the consequences of conflict and persecution for years, UNHCR is there to assist. Learn how, in 2023, #FlexibleFunding from our donors enabled us to be there. reporting.unhcr.org/flexible-fundi

Refugees can make important contributions to the communities that welcome them. If they are given the chance. Just take a look at Brazil. bit.ly/4eQMLfz

What a moment! The Refugee Olympic Team Team proudly floated in at the #Paris2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony with Cindy Ngamba and Yahya Al-Ghotany as flag-bearers. 37 athletes. One goal: representing refugees from all over the world at the highest level of sports. #CheerForRefugees

I am sorry to see that despite years of talk, gender inequality is on full display at the #UNGA General Debate. Less than 10% of speakers this week are women. This is unacceptable – especially when we know gender equality delivers for peace, climate action and much more.

The first people I met arriving at the Syrian/Lebanese border were Qasem and his daughter. After 12 years as a refugee he feels safe to return home and start rebuilding a life in Syria. It won’t be easy. But the hope I saw in his eyes was real — and deserves our support.

An appeal to European leaders from a lifetime humanitarian: as you discuss boosting defense spending please don’t overlook humanitarian aid, which faces devastating cuts. Aid, too, is about keeping your countries safe. Aid promotes stability. And a stable world is a safer world.

Flexible funding isn’t a nice-to-have. It's a must-have. It’s what stands between refugees and unmet needs. Our Flexible Funding Report 2024 shows how it enabled UNHCR to respond in emergencies and forgotten crises. Find out more: unhcr.org/media/flexible
