15 April 1945. British troops liberated the German concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen. Teenage diarist Anne Frank had died there of typhus a few weeks earlier. The British troops found 53,000 emaciated prisoners and 10,000 dead bodies lay unburied.

19 April 1995. Alfred P. Murrah Federal Office Building in Oklahoma City, USA, was destroyed by a huge bomb, planted by Timothy McVeigh, a disaffected war veteran. A total of 168 people were killed, including 19 children.

20 April 1999. 15 people (including the 2 gunmen) were killed in the “Columbine High School massacre”. The perpetrators were school students. At the time it was the deadliest school shooting in US history, but mass shootings in the USA have subsequently become commonplace.
